Contact UsAs we get older, we are at a higher risk of developing health conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease or Type 2 diabetes. An NHS Health Check can help reduce these risks and make sure we stay healthy. NHS Health Checks are usually carried out at GP surgeries or pharmacies, and you will be told if you are due to have a check. Checks happen every five years and everyone who is eligible will receive an invitation either by text or letter.
LiveWell Dorset is supporting this important work by delivering targeted NHS Health Checks - a new mobile service offering these checks direct to local communities and workplaces, targeting people who are most at risk of developing these health conditions.
The NHS Health Check is a free check-up of your cardiovascular health. Even though you might be feeling great, if you’re over forty you may be at risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, diabetes or dementia.
The NHS Health Check can help you reduce these risks and make sure that you stay healthy. You will find out if you are higher risk of developing certain health problems. You will be given lifestyle advice based on your results to help lower your risk of these conditions.
You might be eligible for a check if:
If you are eligible you do not need to do anything. You will receive an invitation from your GP to attend a check when your time is due.
A targeted health check takes place in the community – for instance: at your workplace or in a local community centre. You may be invited to attend one of these local community drop-in targeted health checks if you are:
It takes no more than 30 minutes where you’ll be asked some simple questions about the health of your family (parents, brothers, sisters) and the lifestyle choices you make that may put your health at risk.
You’ll have your height and weight measured along with your blood pressure. Plus a free cholesterol and diabetes check, and you will receive your results straight away, no waiting for test results to come through at a later date. This will help to assess your risk of cardiovascular disease in the next ten years.
After your check you will be given personalised advice about how to reduce your risk and you may need further tests with your GP.
You’ll be able to find out how simple lifestyle changes, such as diet and physical activity can lower your risk of developing serious health problems later in life.
Whether you are eligible for an NHS Health Check or not, LiveWell Dorset is still here for you, offering FREE support to lead a healthier life. Registration is easy and our advisors and coaches can help you to: manage your weight, move more, quit smoking and reduce drinking.
